Finalist at Yamaha Montage Festival (Brazil)

Postby Drummond » Fri Feb 02, 2018 9:23 am

Hey guys,

I'm happy as I'm a finalist in Brazil's Yamaha Montage Festival. I have a chance to win a Montage 6! Any keyboard player in Brazil could participate sending a video improvising over one of three provided backing tracks (created on Montage by some famous Brazilian keyboard players) and I sent a video and was on e of the 3 selected finalists. They lent me a Montage 6 to prepare a presentation exploring its potentials (up to 10 min) and the final will be in São Paulo next tuesday, (6th of February, 2018) all expenses paid. I'm excited for it! it will be a big show with famous Brazilian artists attending and they will choose one of us to keep the Montage. I'll record a video playing my presentation here in my home studio and make it available after the contest.

If anyone wishes to watch the video I sent to participate, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK4sCurLxFM
We could use any synths for that.

If anybody is interested I can write what I think about Montage later. I have a Fusion and a Kronos to compare to it among other gear.

I'll try do to my best!

Cool Drummond, I saw your 6HD in the background.

Good Luck in the Festival, sounds like you will have a lot of fun :)

That's one heck of a setup you have there.

Tell us a little about your keyboard pedal setup.

Good to hear from you, Take Care ... Jesse

That's a great demo piece there Daniel . . . . .

You've got some lightning-fast changes going on there too, and I LOVE that Moogie Synth Lead sound.

All good luck with the contest!

Thanks guys!

Pedal: I use a Behringer FCB1010 to trigger midi notes with my foot. In my band's concerts I use it to trigger the virtual pads in Kronos, which may have samples, chords, notes etc assigned to them. The FCB also has 2 continuous controller pedals and I use one for expression and the other for mixed duties, usually wah wah, filter cutoff control or effects mix control. Besides that there's a half damper sustain for kronos, an expression pedal for the hammond xk1c and a switch to control leslie also on the xk1c.

Both Kronos and Montage allow switching from one sound to other without interruption (doesn't cut the sound that was sounding before) and that makes changing sounds easier. Also, I use a lot of splits, layers with different velocities triggering different sounds to avoid as much as I can switching programs/combis during a song. On the Yamaha festival I will use a switch pedal to move forward from song to song but usually with kronos I'll just tap on the touchscreen.

The lead sound is a Jordan Ruddess inspired patch!

Yes, the Alesis Fusion is the synth I use as my main midi controller in the studio, but also for some sounds, specially synth sounds.

There was a tie among the three finalists and they decided the order using the "who used most montage resources" criteria. I got 3rd! And I'll receive a free Reface keyboard (can choose on of the 4 models). Considering there were over 300 participants and that I live my life partially as a musician but mostly as a psychologist and psychology teacher, I'm very happy about the results. First place was really really awesome! Lot's of great contacts over there also!

A video with a rehearsal of the exact songs I played in the final is located here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwiXRzazT3I

Daniel,

You are an exceptionally fine player . . . . 8)

Not only getting to grips with the Montage in a short time, but programming those voice sets for each excerpt.

If that wasn't tough enough, you then played them flawlessly (as far as I could see).

Nowhere to hide on video in one take . . . ?

You deserve your win - and I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with the reface - whichever one you choose . . . .

I was lucky enough to go to the Reface launch event at Abbey Road, here in the UK and spoke to the guy

who headed the design team.

thank you! It was a lot of work! I chose the DX to have a dedicated FM synth.

If I remember correctly, the Reface DX is VERY much more "immediate" with its programming, than the the original 4-op Dxes were . . .

Some have declared they are a bit overpriced, in the Yamahmusicians forum, but hey,

you're getting one free - which is great . . .

Do let us know what you think . . .
