Sector101 memory modules installed, I'm done!

Postby 2ManyKeys » Sat May 19, 2018 6:58 pm

Got two memory modules from Brian at Sector 101 today. I also had new Fusion end caps to install so it was time for last but of surgery on the Fusion - hopefully for a while. It's a great synth but a completely cumbersome beast to work on. I hate opening this thing up!

The modules went in fairly easy though the module on Engine 2 (digital expansion board) is a real pain to get in there. On top of that, Alesis had decided at some point to completely wrap the main hard drive cable in metal foil for noise immunity no doubt. Unfortunately that would come into direct contact with the surface of that memory module. I insulated the module upper surface with a couple layers of clear packing tape to avoid problems.

After installing I ran the system diagnostics and memory tests - fortunately before putting this monster back together. Engine 2 memory tested fine, but Engine 1 was failing big time and reporting a whole list of failed locations. :o

So, I removed the RF shield again and removed the main board memory expansion. I reseated it several times assuming one of the pins might have made marginal contact. Indeed after that all was well and it passed all the memory tests.

So now the Fusion is pretty well maxed out. Yeah it's only a 64G SSD but I think that's more than enough. I don't imagine I'll see many more memory errors while trying to load huge samples one after the other.

All that's left to do now is paint the whole thing metallic purple. :D

Man that sample RAM expansion makes all the difference. I think the Fusion OS has some trouble managing RAM with the default 64M per engine. It shouldn't but it does. I see no more "can't load" out of memory errors. I created a completely bloated test song that loads 10 tracks of huge samples including some of the Novachord stuff. No problem.

Back in 2015 (I think it was) Brian DID make some experimental 256Mb E3s.

He sent me a pair, along with a pair of 128s to try in my 8HD.

BOTH capacities installed AND WORKED - but sadly the Fusion could only SEE 128Mb of the 256s . . .

IIRC - Brian thought that signs were good that they would work (even up to 512Mb!)

as far as the Processors were concerned.

The problem seems to be something missing in the OS . . . . .(sigh)

What might have been eh?

Being the optimist that I am I bought the pair of experimental 256Mb E3s from Brian :)
