Backlight problem. Fixed it myself!

Postby Marcos » Fri May 02, 2008 8:03 pm

I always leave my Fusion on. My kids take piano and always have to practice. Well, my backlight went out. I didn't want to pay $200 for a new LCD screen because I could still barely see the letters on the screen and thought there must be a cheaper way to fix the backlight.

Since I'm a pretty technical guy, I decided to open it up and see what I could find. Turns out that there were two small boards that had blown. One board had a capacitor that was split and the other board had a crispy (as in burnt) resistor. The resistor was hidden under another component.

Here is schematic from the service manual of the two parts (circled in red) with part numbers.

Radio Shack couldn't match the components so I called Alesis. Their parts department emailed me a service manual no questions asked. After I found the boards, I called them back and ordered them for about $30. After installing the new boards, the LCD worked like a champ.

I also took advantage of the Sweetwater memory deal and upgraded the Fusion's memory while I was at it.

Hopes this helps someone with same problem!

Excellent news ! Thank you for posting.
I think I have exactly the same problem.
Good to know that it wont cost too much.
Although I have seen the boards you refer to
I cannot determine that they have the burnt component
that you are referring to. Well, I have no technical knowledge.

Can you post photos of the boards you took out to see what
you are referring to. Did you have to ckange the backlight also ?

Also, can you tell where, apart from the your posted photo, the manual
refers to the boards ?
Where are the schematics for those boards ?
I don't find them in all those pages.

I'll have to get you pictures later. No, I did not have to replace the backlight. The boards provide power to it. I pulled that picture from page 163 of the service manual. Parts and shipping was around $30.

The burnt resistor was on the right board. If yours is burnt, you will see an area on the board that looks burned as well.

The capacitor is on the left board. I think it is blue. If it is cracked or split, it is bad.

Hope it helps.

YES !!! I identified the burnt resistor on the right board. It looks like the other resistors but darker and the area below it in the board is brownish.
The blue capacitor on the left board looks fine.

I will order the right board only.
Thanks, Marcos.

Exactly. User support like this, is a perfect example of why the Fusion will not die a sudden and quick death.

The 6HD backlight issue

Postby apogeevideo » Fri Dec 19, 2008 12:26 am

All -

I just received a 6HD that I bought used, and of course the backlight is out, so I can't do anything with it :(. I opened it up, as I'm also a pretty techie guy, and see the two boards that Marcos is referring to. On the one on the left there is a power lead coming off it to the other board, and on that board (on the left) one of the pins on the board is broken...my assumption would be that it's a broken circuit and that's why the power isn't being passed to the second board, perhaps this is why the backlight isn't on? I see no burned resistors or split caps.

I emailed Alesis to get both boards - figure I may as well replace both while I'm under the hood. Can anyone confirm that the power lead connecting the two boards in the middle of that diagram has something to do with the power for the backlight?

Many thanks!

Yes, I think that is AC from on board to the other one.
it is not possible to connect that broken pin with a wire ?

Hi guys,

Does anyone know where can I found the service manual to download?

Any of you have it (PDF) in a way that can be "shared"?

Thanks,

Frank

Please contact Alesis for the manual as it is against their policy to post it. We tried to get permission but they said no.
