I've just acquired a 6HD . . . key not working

Postby parametric » Thu Dec 15, 2016 7:00 pm

Now I have one of each . . . .

One fly in the ointment is that the B3 key doesn't work. I'll investigate when I open her up for E3 installation and SSD conversion.

Looking forward to having ALL my content on both. No more lugging the 8HD up and down stairs.

6HD keybed seems very nice - best "synth" keybed I've tried so far - so I'm pleased . . .

I prefer it to the MOXF6 and the Akai Advance61 . .

I opened it up and proceeded to remove the keybed . . .

Simpler than I thought in the end. I've NOT determined if this can be done WITHOUT opening "the lid" - which is the usual way of getting inside . . . .

If you turn the 6HD over - there are a series of pairs of black self-tappers - quite coarse threads that hold the keybed to the base.

After packing the keys with a blanket (to support them when released) I removed the self tappers, then, supporting the now-loose keybed, turned the 6HD right side up.

Keybed removed

I chose at this point to unplug the two keybed ribbon cables from the system board (rather than the key bed) - it's easier that way and doesn't disturb the keybed connectors .. .

This shows the two ribbon cables attached to the keybed - unplugged from the sytem board

There are TWO long pcbs that are screwed to the keybed. It is these that hold the contacts.

I located the pcb which had the offending B3 key, and removed it.

It was the CLEAR why the B3 key was not triggering. The CORNER of the rubber had not been seated properly - allowing dirt/dust in (I guess).

You can see it clearer here . . .

I peeled off the short strip of four and dusted them with a Dust-off spray and cleaned them with IPA and a cotton bud. I also cleaned the contact pads on the pcb with IPA . . .

After cleaning, the strip was replaced (properly) making sure that it was FLAT to the pcb, all round, and the keybed replaced, taking care not to trap the RED/BLACK two pin plug lead that connect to the lid pcb (when ready to close . . . )

Whilst open, I upgraded the Ram with an E3 Module (from sector101) in the two empty locations shown.

Finally, the Hard Disk was removed and replaced with a 128Gb SSD - same as the one in my 8HD

The original Hard Disk is screwed directly to the base of the 6HD, unlike the 8HD which uses a rudimentary cradle for the 3.5" HDD.

The Plastic cradle I used for BOTH Fusions WILL hold TWO SSDs. I placed the SSD in the upper position, this allowing more airflow beneath the drive.

Both the cradle and the SSD itself are extremely light, so I allowed the mounting screws through the base of the Fusion simple to "self-tap" into the plastic cradle . . . . QUITE secure enough, in this case . . .

Firing up the 6HD in diagnostic mode, both engines now report 192Mb.

In Global Mode, the SSD formatted in about 3 seconds - and is presently receiving the <Volume> from my 8HD

(At the conclusion of these procedures, the B3 key was working perfectly again.)

I DID email Richard Diemer at bustedgear.com concerning the Fusion Key Contacts but he is unsure as to the precise contact strips used.

He advised comparing to the very clear pics in the service proceedure for the Roland D50 and Korg Karma repair description on his site to see if they are similar . . . .

IMO they look to be the same.

As I've said before - the Fatar Site is about as much use as a cat-flap in an Elephant House - for clear descriptions OR Spare parts, which is a great shame, at the key contacts are CRUCIAL to ANY board that uses them.

Nice Doc Chris.

What's IPA and does it work better than alcohol and a q-tip?

Isopropyl Alcohol - works great as a cleaner.

Abbreviations CAN be dangerous though - Jesse . . .

In this neck of the woods, IPA CAN mean "India Pale Ale" . . . . (from the days of the British Raj) . . .

So the CONTEXT becomes important IYSWIM

Sorry to resurrect this old post but i need to source some replacement Rubber contact strips in the UK.. can anyone confirm what actual part I need and a possible supplier for them??
One of the keys has a malformed contact 'bubble' and it preventing its own and neighbouring notes from sounding.

Any help will be greatly appreciated..

Hi Krakli, and welcome to the Forums . . .

(no apologies needed . . . . key contact problems will probably (eventually) visit us all . . . )

I had a similar problem when I bought my (used) 6HD . . . . . as you may well have read . . ?

viewtopic.php?f=13&t=6852#p36017

Unless the contact rubber has been seriously "butchered", I would remove the strip that INCLUDES the key(s) that don't work, and give it - and the corresponding contacts on the pcb, a good clean.

Clean Warm water with a few drops of washing-up liquid, for the Rubber -

Cotton-buds and some IsoPropyl Alcohol for the carbon contacts on the pcb . . .

Replace - and try. It's important to make sure the strip is totally bedded down . . .

ONE CORNER, on mine was NOT - and it allowed dirt in . . . .

I didn't need to replace the rubber, so have no knowledge on acquiring it . . .

I did some research and discovered that the 6HD keybed appears to be a Fatar TP/9 S

THIS site claims to be able to supply the correct contacts:

https://www.synth-parts.com/en/Products ... oards.html

Hope that helps . . . .
